About Assam Rifles
It was in the year 1835, Assam Rifles was raised as Cachar Levy and today it is one of the oldest Central Para Military Forces in the country. The main purpose of raising Assam Rifles initially was to guard the alluvial plains of Assam from the wild and unruly tribes inhabiting the surrounding hill tracts.
Today lot of expansion and modernization has been done and the Assam Rifles boasts of 46 battalions. The force is not only responsible for maintaining internal security in the North-Eastern region but it is very efficiently guarding the Indo-Myanmar Border.
Before the force became Assam Rifles in 1917 it was named and organized into many forms as the Assam Frontier Police in 1883, Assam Military Police in1891, Eastern Bengal and Assam Military Police in 1913. Assam Rifles is one of the few forces which have been able to earn numerous laurels not only in aid to the civil administration but also serving the country by fighting alongside the Army.
